I had a "gun grab" incident on my last day of field training. My FTO and I stopped a vehicle for an expired registration. The FTO knew his ID, he gave a false one. After an escape attempt I got into a tussle with him. The FTO had to deal with the passenger while I fought with the driver.
During the scuffle the kid tried to grab my sidearm. I still had the inkpen in my hand that I was using to issue the citation. When I felt the tug at my weapon, I stabbed the suspect repeatedly in the arm. The kid suddenly had a change of heart.
That incident gave me two different reactions to deal with from the Admin.
1.Praise
2. Ridicule
Had some attaboys from the Front Line Supervisors, but....the Brass did not like the fact that he got that close to begin with. I agreed with both ideas. I did not like the fact that he got that close, but we were on the ground fighting and I had no control over it. But...I did have the focus to adress the situation and remedy the problem, and not just grab my weapon and wrestle with him over it giving him a 50/50 chance of winning the upper hand.
I use this incident a lot to address weapon retention with my DT students. Ill give then all the details and let them critique me. Gives them a chance to visualize their own reactions and keeps me honest.
I have been bitching and moaning about the quality of training most officers reiceive in the area of H2H. Its the most used tactic and the most neglected area of training.
