Post subject: Two more Marines die today

Two Marines based out of Twentynine Palms were killed this week fighting in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, officials announced Thursday.

Corporal Claudio Patino IV, of Yorba Linda, and Corporal Kevin A. Cueto of Santa Clara were both killed Tuesday, in separate incidences.

Cueto was killed by an IED blast while in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, according to a press release issued by the U.S. Marine Corps.

Patino was killed by small arms fire while patrolling against enemy forces in the same area, a separate release by the U.S.M.C. said.

22-year-old Patino had enlisted July 26, 2006, and was in his third deployment. He served previously in Iraq in 2008 and Afghanistan in 2009.

Cueto, 23, had enlisted in August 2005 and had served overseas once before, in 2009. His awards include: the Purple Heart, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Patino was also a decorated fighter. His awards include: the Purple Heart, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Unit Commendation, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon and the NATO Medal.

The deaths of these two Marines come less than a week after two fellow Marines from the same base were killed in action.
