| 5 yrs of Shotokan. Its great for learning how to isolate and lock out your body and stances, but not practical as a stand alone combatives system. We use Shotokan to teach basics in our Aikijujutsu/Kenjustsu system. We later incorporate Wu Wei Gung Fu for teaching striking drills. If all you have to choose from in your area is Shotokan, by all means go for it. Anything is better than nothing. My old teacher used to tell me "Dont mess with a guy that's spent 20 years as a carpenter if he has a hammer in his hand." In other words, anything that you study for several years is going to be effective. Hope this helps. |
Why do you say Shotokan is impractical? Isn't it a Tenshin art?
