Post subject: Peace Time soldier

This was a poem written about the generation of Soldiers in the Australian army post Vietnam who served in the 70's, 80's and early 90's who did not get a chance to utilise their training overseas. However I have posted it as a dedication to anyone from any nation who has served their country but did not get a chance to go overseas.

You may never have heard a shot fired in anger
but this does not matter
You wore the jersey
and swore to the duty

You lived and breathed a war
that never actually happened
but you still did your duty
just like every good soldier

The sacrifices you made
to serve your country
are well and truelly felt

I realise you may sit there at night
wondering if you ever did enough
and thinking if you lived up to the
motto of Duty First

Well let me tell you this
peace time soldier

The lessons you learnt
were learnt from the best
the lessons learnt
by Vietnam vets

You helped keep these lessons alive
and helped keep silly bastards like me
stay alive
