At what point does someone decide that elected officials no longer have the right to wave off their details when they're traveling in public?

The first thing I thought was "This guy doesn't have a detail?" WTF.

He did not hsve a detail because he was on personal business at the fair with his family. He wanted to project the common guy and basically not be second guessed. We would have him burned and screamed about any PSD for his private affairs at the taxpayer dime.

So if Pelosi has a detail when she gets her hair coiffed or nails done, is this OK? Or will we be screaming and shouting about abuse of our tax money?

I'm not asking sides here but asking to assess what you scream and shout about.

I do admire the gent for both not having a detail present, as most of the pols seem to do these days, when he wasn't conducting public business. I also have to give him credit for trying to help someone,which is also a rare quality these days. I would suggest he take some self defense courses i the future though

Whether he wanted to put on a "show" of being a "people's kinda guy" or even if he simply wanted to spend time with his family without the lapel pin cordon... irrelevant.

He chose to enter public office and has no choice but to accept the responsibilities and obligations to the electorate.

It would have been less secure but more than "esthetically" reasonable for him to have told his DL he wanted loose escort, dressed to fit the environment and to have carried on with his field-trip.

My Team did exactly that at our State Fair for an ambassador's daughter and her children without drawing attention and without completely removing her security.

Of course I applaud the guy for involving himself, but that doesn't relieve him of disregarding his obligations.
