LRB Arms makes an awesome M-25, a great all around rifle.

Get a Savage, use the savings on good glass and more ammo! or reloading supplies.
Or if you hit the lottery there is always a Surgeon to get on the Xmas list.
Also, there is a place in Plainville KS that builds excellent bolt guns based on the Rem 700, cant think of the name right off hand.
You know where I am currently, I can get the info on that builder if you wish.

Broad and multiple spectrums here...
Economy: Savage
High-End: Mcmillan M1A
Balanced: Sniper Central Varmint package.
Bottom line: Choose the weapon best suiting your abilities, budget, goals, and application.

If you can find one, a pre-64 Winchester Mod 70. Old School rifle with outstanding accuracy without Modification, but you can still play with the mods. Hell just find the action and build it from there. I had one in 30/06, dumbest thing I ever did was let it go.

Huge fan of the Remington 700 SPS tactical, it is a great rifle, 20" barrel very compact size and you lose very little over a 26" barrel in velocity at distance. Remington 700 PSS would be my next choice. Either way you can't go wrong with a 700 action both the M24 and M40 are based on Remington actions for a reason. Parts, barrels, stocks etc are very easy to get and any gunsmith worth his salt can work on a 700.
All that being said most guys worry to much about their rifle and not enough about good optics and solid rings and mounts.

I agree on the optics point. Take an M24 and put a Walmart house brand optic on it LOL!
Ever played with the Remington 700 ADL? Almost got a barely used package for $450.00

I've got a Savage .308 11 series with 3-9x40mm optics and a 22" barrel.
It's a GOOD rifle.
Didn't cost $4.5K like other packages. But I wish I had the moola for the M1A.
The shooter is more important than the rifle.
Vasily Zaitsev normally used a standard issue rifle!

I have to agree, the Savage Model 10 FP is an outstanding long range .308.
I have one with a Nightforce 5.5x22 NXS 56mm on it and it is a shooter out past 1000 yds. Rifle is about $900 with the HS Precision stock. Spend the left over cash for optics and Black Hills 175gr ammo.
If you shoot better than .5 moa, an AI is a great rifle but it is heavy to carry.
