Post subject: Corrosive Ammo

Excuse me gents, is it ok to use corrosive ammo in an AR-15 type weapon, providing it is cleaned promptly after use, or will it still gum up the gas tube?

Just received an ammo purchase and apparently I did not read the fine print. Embarassed

my understanding of corrosive ammo is that it makes non CL parts rust so as long as you clean them you should be fine. I don't see how it can gum the gas tube: the corrosive part is just a chemical around the primer, when heated it deposits residues that can make non protected part rust.

hum, that's not too clear isn't it ? anyway, as long as you clean your rifle after shooting, you should be ok (Windex or other ammonia based solution help).

that's my opinion until a specialist prove me wrong Laughing

It will not hurt your weapon as long as you clean it right away , use warm soapy water first and then after drying use solvent .

Clean with hot soapy water or a thin light machine oil prior to using any bore solvent. The material in the primers is what is corrosive. It also forms a strong acid when it mixes with an ammonia based bore solvent and causes etching of chrome linings. I shoot quite a bit of it and mostly clean with break free and have never had any issues.
I know its an older subject but figured I would throw in a reply.

Necropost for me too!

The perfect solution for corrosive ammo is called 'GUNZILLA"
This stuff is magic! Before I started using it, my VZ would start rusting on the way back from the range (seriously). With Gunzilla I'm at +700 rounds and weeks since the last cleaning. I am pretty sure I'll find some rust but nothing as extreme as before with CPL or grease.

Anyway, I am not related to them in any way, but for corrosive stuff, that's my answer.
