God Bless the Heroes of D-Day and WWII !!!! I for one will not forget what they endured and gave the rest of us. This was my Father's generation and we have so much to thank and Honor them for!

As I was mowing the lawn today I was thinking that nobody (save us) would remember the significance of tomorrow.
And I bet that just like Memorial Day there will be no one in the general public to remember what happened on those beaches at Normandy.

Why, President Osama will be speaking, of course.
No doubt it will be to tell the world how wonderful and brave Americans are, and how we will fight anywhere we are needed to fight, and will vanquish all oppressors of freedom.
HAHAHAHAHA. I had you going on that last part, didn't I? He'll be speaking, but if past speeches are any indicator, it may be to apologize for soiling Europe with our f y presence back in the war...
Seriously, though. I think that the majority of us here as members are the type that think of Pearl Harbor, Midway, D-Day, and a host of other proud moments in America's past on a fairly regular basis. Maybe it is something in our genetic makeup. Maybe it was some curious combination of attention-grabbing stories we heard in our youth. Maybe it is having a backbone and a conscience.

Certainly marks the end of an era. Out of that harrowing time, though, came a lot of very good things that soooo many take for granted, and don't give their proper respects -- if respects -- to those who made what we have today possible.
Also, a lot of very good movies to watch. Four of my faves are Kelley's Heroes, The Dirty Dozen, The Longest Day, and In Harm's Way.
By the way, Recalled, are you implying that ours is likely the last generation of conscience? I think it's still there just in smaller numbers with each generation.

Sadly, although certainly not the last *people* with a conscience, but possibly yes, more or less, perhaps the last American generation with one. At least until any awakening. The smaller numbers you mention are perhaps small enough that the generation is no longer with a conscience, so much as there are members of that generation that have one.
Immediate gratification and self-absorption are far more pervasive with this next generation of Americans. Instead of teaching patience, persistence, perseverance, honesty, sincerity, and the ability to reason, our failed socially-engineered education system has taught American schoolchildren how to accept book-instruction to be gospel and that Socialism is the best way to do things. They have been taught that the past is not necessarily worthy of mention, much less learning from it, unless it is their particular points to memorize. Truth is not necessary, and the ends justify the means, as long as the ends are the ones selected by the Socialist system. Logic and reason no longer apply as they ought.
This is even evident in the youngest of the members of our military - far more so than it was in the past.
When you already know that you are right (through indoctrination) and you know that any "perceived" wrong that you inflict (redistribution of wealth, standards norming, and discrimination) will be justified by the end state (the theoretically blissful state of universal equality), there is no need for a conscience. It can be effectively bred out of the sheeple gradually, much like the method for eating an elephant, or boiling a frog.

I think much can be traced back to parenting. The rest, probably, rests squarely on the shoulders of our elected politicians.
Meanwhile, I would like to extend a heart-felt thank you to any surviving family members of those who served in WWI, the Korean "conflict", and the Vietnam War. Vietnam seems to go without mentioning. WWI seems to have been all but forgotten. The Korean "conflict" seems to never gets its just dues.
To all who served, to their surviving family members, there are still those who are grateful for the service and the sacrifice. Thank you!

+1 to Spot,
I for one, put the lack of respect and true patriotism back on parents. Generations from the 60's on started a decline in teaching and instilling in their kids what it means to be an American, what it means to be a productive part of society, and what it means to have courage, and integrity. Examples are plentiful, as I am typing this I am thinking about my time in LA during Katrina and Ike, I am not dissing all those that hail from LA, but there was an atmosphere there that made me sick to my stomach, and thought maybe we should fence of the state and make it a max-security prison where they fend for themselves.
Sorry about digressing here, but it just came out.
Thank you current vets, vets of past wars and conflicts, and for all of those that are shepherds and warriors. Your sacrifices mean something to me, and my son will know what you did and why you did it.

I agree that the parent should be the primary influence. I just think that the average parent is leaning to the left nowadays, and they are more of a parrot for the more serious Socialists than they are free-thinking, rational adults. In such a case, a vast group of adults with no sense will only lead to children with no sense, won't it? Especially in a society that embraces non-traditional parenting, and has all but scoffed at families that have a "normal" parent couple.
The erosion starts with one, that teaches thirty. Many of those thirty may not take the spoon-feeding completely, but perhaps five will. Now there are six, and they will teach 180... We are at this point outnumbered, I think, because there are far more than six. I would rather be wrong than right, but I am concerned that it is too late.
Remember what Tom Arnold said to Arnold Schwarzenegger in "True Lies" about being a parent?
