1yldndn Has some good advice.

BTDT went to work for more than a decade enthusiastically despite the dregs, the politics and the stress. Then you hit the wall and say what's next? Have an exit plan... or two.

In my area reserve officers work for free. You get your uniform supplied and that's all. You have to put yourself through the academy and bear random expenses. It has become a place to park your badge if you are leaving police work and you don't want to risk losing your certification.
Sorry,

Yeah, I found that to be the case. However, I was told that -- without promises -- that I could probably expect more.

Anyway, I had a feeling that there is so much more than what I was being told (not being told). I passed. Perhaps in another life, you know.

Most agencies in California won't pay for reserve time and they sure won't pay for your academy either. However there is Imperial County sheriff's Dept. that does pay reserves for special events such as Glamis during the busy season. If you plan to go full time..... reserves is the way to get your foot in the door however you might have to go back to a full time academy if you don't have level 1 training.

I have a buddy of mine that is putting himself through an extended academy and has completed level 3 and 2. If he gets picked up he will still have to go through a full time academy.

The only advantage of being a reserve in California is you get a CCW. So if you do EP work it is worth it...cause we all know its a bitch to get a CCW in California.

I believe it all depends on your department. I have been a reserve for almost a year. i paid for everything out of pocket, but remember you get what you pay for. i only get paid for special events, but i have done a lot of drug interdiction stops, raids and warrants in under a year. The experience pays in its own right. Nothing like your first drug buy or buy-bust. good luck and have fun.
