Daoul,

It is unfortunate that we do not have a conversion from HM to Civilian Equivalant. I feel your pain. I am an 8425 and what can I do in the Civ Land? not much. I am a provider now but civilians think I can only be a nurse when I retire. Just remember. If people could join the military and get a civ qual alot more people would be doing it. There are plenty of companies looking for EMTs that have combat tours under their belts.

Don't let it get you down. Keep saving lives and never forget where your medical experience came from(HM). Corpsman have a long standing tradition and we have great training. Semper Fi Devil Doc!!!!!

Joe,

This should be a PM, but I'm posting it as it applies to most medics home from the service.

Most current contracts require ALS. It's up to you- either you do the time, or you can bang your head against the wall. I did it for a long time... finally gave in.

Given the schedule and the prerequisites (virtually none), I am guessing tht you will run through EMT-Basic and go straight into an accelerated paramedic curriculum in order to comply with NHTSA/DOT rules.

I believe that the schedule is for didactic only; doing your street time simultaneously would be virtually impossible.

I am providing this info as a service to the community. I do not endorse Acadian or any other provider unless I specifically endorse them.

I received the following email from Acadian; use at your own risk:

Information about the National EMS Academy’s Military Medic to Paramedic Bridge Program is attached. The 14-week course is set to begin August 17th at our campus in Lafayette, Louisiana. We will begin making admissions decisions on July 15th, so act now – there is limited space in the course.

This program is conducted in partnership with South Louisiana Community College (SLCC), qualifying it for federal financial aid, including the G.I. Bill. For financial aid information, please refer to the attached SLCC Application and to SLCC’s web site: www.southlouisiana.edu.

To be considered for the program, mail the completed SLCC Application to the address at the top of the form along with a $5 check or money order, payable to SLCC (no cash, please). You will also need to request an official copy of your transcript from any colleges you have attended, or from the American Council on Education (ACE) for applicable military training. ACE transcripts can be requested via the following web sites:

aarts.army.mil (Soldiers and Army veterans with a Basic Active Service Date of 1 Oct 1981, or later)
smart.navy.mil (most Navy and Marine Corps active duty, reserve, and veterans)
www.au.af.mil/au/ccaf/...cripts.asp (most Air Force active duty, reserve, and veterans)

Please email, fax, or mail to me any applicable certifications or certificates you possess (i.e. National Registry card, ACLS, NIMS, Haz Mat).

NIMS 100 and 700 are required for this program. These courses may be completed for free online at the following website: www.fema.gov/emergency...htm#item1. Once you have completed the course, print a copy of your certificates and send them to me.

Hazardous Materials Awareness training is also required for this program. There is a free, online course available at the following web address: www.mufrti.org/online/index.shtml. Once you have completed the course, please send me a copy of your certificate.

If you have questions or need assistance, I can be reached by email or one of the numbers listed below.

Sincerely,

Thanks for the replies, guys. I've spoke to a couple of companies about contract work, but still contemplating. I've also got a fire department that is interested in me and has offered to pay for any and all training I need. So, I guess life could be worse....I could work for FEMA.

I saw this topic and noticed it was all info as of 2009. I was wondering if anyone has current info. In particular I heard some time ago that there is an accelerated program for SOCM (special operations combat medic) and 18D qualified personnel to get their EMT-P. Is anyone aware of a program like this or know who to contact?

Thanks

NREMT does not recognize Military Medics from all of my research gathered years ago. The best you will find is an EMT-B or EMT-I bridge to Paramedic.

SOCM medics receive some healthcare provider certification. Don't remember exactly what it's called, but this allows you to test for a Paramedic through the NREMT.
