Post subject: National Registry test question.

Anyone in here take the national registry? I am registered with the NREMT but need some study advice from people who are already certified. I got my EMT-B renewed a few weeks ago and have decided to try the "I" now along with the NREMT test. Any suggestions?

Aaron:

From what I can gather from your post I would not worry about taking the basic EMT Registry test. Once you complete your EMT-I and get a state certification you can apply directly for NREMT-I test. Having your NR basic will be of no advantage. If you are looking for DOS work as a medic their minimum standard is EMT-I 85. I can't speak for any other contracts as I do not 1st hand knowledge.

I went this process less than 2 years ago so my info is pretty up to date. I am certified in NC and the EMT-I here with clinical and ride-a-longs comes out to about 200 hours total. You also have a minimum number of skills so if you do your clinical and ride-a-longs with low volume providers you may have to do more than the minimum times. You can go to the State's OEMS web site and find a training calendar which lists many EMT-I courses.

As far of a study guide go, do a goggle search for Brady study guides. You should be able to get them from either Barnes & Noble or Amazon. I used them and they were a great help. Make sure you get a study guide that has all the practical skills check off sheets. These will give you the critical steps and the automatic failures. Like I said they were a big help.

If you have any questions especially about certification in NC please feel free to send me a PM.

Best of Luck

NC is where I have my Basic at now and will test for Florida hopefully within the next month. I was trying to find an "I" locally here in Fl but it's cost prohibitive (4K for Paramedic) and Fl doesn't recognize "I's" anyway. Your'e either a basic or paramedic. I still have my Brady books (basic and paramedic) and the test sheets from the NR proctors but was just trying to get a little more info on how the test is run.

+1 to Yoesmite

The only thing having NR gets you is reciprocity under some circumstances. Minimum for most security related gigs is EMT-I 85.

In response to what you said about how the test is run....I took the EMT-I test in Georgia and my class was the first 'test bunnies' for a new system that is evidently going to be used in the future. The practical skills test is just that, done with an observer/scorer, once you pass that, you get submitted for a written test date for the National Registry EMT-I test. It is evidently going all to computer based testing and they are strict and tuff, lol. I had to empty my pockets, put all my stuf in a locker(provided), had to take my watch off, had my id checked, fingerprint scanned, and was only then able to enter into a 'secure' room with computer banks. All computers were video monitored and the room is wired for sound, no talking allowed, you sign in on the computer and start taking your test. The questions come from a bank of NR questions and it will start out with easy ones and if you answer those correctly it will increase the difficulty. If you answer a harder question wrong, is will ask you an easier question next. The program is basically evaluating you and what your knowledge level is and determines that by the questions asked. I think the test limit is either 150 questions or 200. Although once the computer has determined that you have the knowledge it will cut you off,or if you have failed it misreably, lol, it will cut you off.It gave me a scare when it shut me down on question 86, I was like "DAMN" but then thought about my answers and figured I must have done pretty good, yes I passed. The questions the usual ones we are used to and you have a choice of 4 answers, the typical 2 you can throw out because they are obviously wrong and then 2 that could both be right, but you really have to read it to make a choice. Typically,if you keep in mind what is BEST FOR THE PATIENT, your answer will be correct. Again, this is in Georgia, I do not know if they are using the system all over the country for NR yet, but that is the plan for the future. Hope this helps, if not, I hope it was at least an interesting read.lol

I just took the EMT I NR test about a month ago. It is an adaptive test based on your knowledge, but unlike the computer based EMT B test the EMT I and Paramedic tests are a flat 150 questions. The rest is still the same you take your hands on practicals first and after passing they authorize you to test at a Pearson View testing center. The best way to study for the I99 test is to study the practice Paramedic books. The EMT I books out there are usually base on an I85 level.

Due to FL licensing requirements, I applied to take the NR test. I got my authorization letter today (4 months later) but haven't set a test date as of yet. Any suggestions? I am still on a retainer as of now and might as well do something constructive while I am waiting to go.
