I looked into it for another SA member and this is the response I got from the different departments.

It seems that smaller forces like Mesa and Tempe are paying more initially than Phoenix PD but there are very limited chances for movement and overtime. With having small amount of openings for Robbery, Homocide etc. its been tough for people to leave once they are in it.

Phoenix seems to pay less initially but offers lots more overtime chances, tons more openings for movement into other departments, SWAT team that can also be called upon by smaller local departments and tons more action.

Now I am not a cop, but I am in security here (small) so my interaction with police is limited. This is just what I got from asking them.

Hope it helps out Hitman.

No intentions of leaving the company yet, but always have to have a long term plan.

I'll give my .02 cents. I worked for a Dept just to the south of Mesa. I was in the hiring process with Mesa at the same time as the dept I worked for. Mesa is having money problems...serious money problems. The LA chief walked in there and fucked everything up according the Mesa Officers that I became friends with. Chiefs come and go so that is a short term problem. I was told by a Mesa SGT that they will be losing their post retirement medical insurance plan because it is too expensive for the city to maintain.

The city does not charge any property tax on the home owners thus making the money problem even worse. They only pay county tax.

As far as moving around and actually making more money, you will do a lot better at Phoenix PD. They have a career enhancement program that pays you extra money for your education, training and experience. Plus they have part time gigs out the ass.

There is a 35 year veteran that is going to retire with a $105,000 pension due to his years of service in the state retirement system and due to the amount of overtime he worked. State of AZ public safety retirement system counts your over time earnings toward your retirement.

In the end I regret not going to Phoenix PD when I moved to AZ. A multitude of assignments to go to. Plus they are addind two more full time SWAT teams to the four they already have.

Take my advice and go to Phoenix. They still need to hire 300 Officers just this year last I heard before leaving for the sand box.
