Mutt,
To answer your question directly, NO...I have not used the IO on a PSD mission...However, we're issued bone guns for use in our med-kits, but I prefer the F.A.S.T. 1 System "First Access for Shock & Trauma" - Sternal IO...I've used it successfully three times in the pre-hospital setting (twice tactically), but have not had the opportunity to use it here while in-country.
If you're not familiar with the device, I have attached a photo...One of the things I like the most is it takes less than a minute to establish and a couple of the other benefits are;
The device is protrudes very minimally and therefore eliminates the risk for dislocation.
It is placed high on the sternum at the site of the manubrium, so it doesn't interfere with CPR.
A couple of drawbacks;
Coupled with the use of a cervical collar can be problematic
The device is still very expensive

I have used the B.I.G. ( bone injection gun) it's used with the Italian Ambulance system, works great and fast , it's a spring loaded device that shoots an 18ga to the Tibial Tuberosity, ( preffered Location) there are 2 models one for Adults one for Peds, It was designed by the Israeli PM.

Mutt,
Just about most medical supply companys carry it or have access to order one...You can try www.pyng.com/ but be aware, if you're trying to purchase one for yourself, you may need a prescription/physician's order giving you authorization to buy it.

Chase, do you know of any power point type presentation or training on these? We are currently using the manual screw in types and am looking for an alternate I can show to the training, supply and medical director where I work....yes it is state side, local county EMS.
Had access to the F.A.S.T. 1 while deployed with the military in Iraq but thank God I never had to use one, although a buddy of mine has some video of him and some fellow medic training on each other with it. Evidently it smarts just a wee bit when it pops in...
